
This report draws on operational data from over 380 distributed energy sites across sub-Saharan Africa, alongside survey responses from 94 energy operators, O&M contractors, and utility grid managers. Our goal: to establish a baseline for how the industry currently manages distributed renewable assets — and where the gaps are widest.
The headline finding is stark: the median energy operator has visibility into less than 60% of their installed asset fleet in real time. The remaining 40% is managed reactively — faults discovered after the fact, maintenance triggered by customer complaints, and performance data assembled from monthly vendor exports.
